The whole series had me hooked from the start because of the very human perspective it gave through the world it showed us. The conclusion gave me a feeling of just perfection. Even though there were some things that happened between Darren and his family and the war he was thrust into, it was all wrapped up in a very dark bow. The story made sense in the end and I had the hardest time putting it down. I just wanted more book! I recommend this series for anyone who loves plot twists and surprises.

Love love love this vampire-based book series. I am a 58 year old female, however, I have always enjoyed "boy" type, action based fiction books as a reader. What I found about the entire Cirque Du Freak series, however, was that it was not JUST about being a vampire, or a member of a Freak Show. It teaches about loyalty and friendship; what a real 'family' is, even without the blood-relation.

In fact, I was so smitten with this series (Mr Shan, are listening?), that I made a gift of all my books to a then 11-year-old friend, because I was confident there was little to no swearing of any consequence, no real sexual content, but a good wholesome and fun teaching story definitely well-worth my time and my young friend's.

Hours and hours of good reading fun and miles of smiles afterward. I cannot wait to read more from Darren Shan.
***Spoiler Alert*** I love this series...all 11 books. Book 12 was rediculous. I don't mind that Darren sacrificed himself. Actually I expected it. I loved the fact that Evanna went and pulled him out of the lake of souls. I thought it was interesting that he bacame a little person. But the whole go back in time and prevent himself from ever taking Madam Octa didn't work for me. It left a million questions unanswered for me. For example; what happened to his soul that was in the little person? Did it cross over or just vanish from existance since he technically would now never become a little person because he never took the spider? I DON'T KNOW. When he does finally die, after living a normal life, and his soul crosses over will Vancha, Creepsley, Evra and anyone else who knew him actually know him anymore in whatever kind of heaven their soul's occupy?

It's seems to me that Shan couldn't come up with a better ending or just didn't want the traditional happy ending. In the version i'll remember Darren died after sacrificing himslef and his soul crossed over to be with Creepsley. That would have been fine with me and that's the way i'm gonna remember it, even though it's a big fat lie.

So in summary...GREAT SERIES of books, but book 12 has possibly the worst ending in fictional history. I HATED IT actually. Any comments would be appreciated.
Discovered Darren Shan from the Demonata Series, and he never disappoints. Won't list points from the book, as not to spoil it for future readers, but I guarantee you'll fall in love with his work. 5*stars

It just continues to get better & better with the each book in the series.
I am an adult & enjoy the tale of Darren & his vampire adventures.
The final book in this series had nice twists in the plot & had a really cool ending.
I can't say I agree with the ending completely but the part where Darren let Steve kill him was very clever. A couple wishes from me are that
1. We should have seen Darren turn into a full vampire
2. Darren and Debbie's relationship would have developed more deeply
3. And I wish Mr. Crepsley wouldn't have died
I also think steve should have been a more sensible person and not been competely bone-headed. I can't say I agree with Shan's choices as a writer but books are for entertainment, they don't have to have happy endings.
I absolutely LOVE this series. My teenage daughter introduced it to me a few years ago. I just introduced my 10 year old to it. She loved it and wished there were more books to read. If a series can keep a 10 year old up in her bed for hours reading it, you know it's good. This series is an adventure and easy to read. Your child will love it and so will you. Buy it, you won't regret it.
