One cold winter night, Jacob runs away from home. He runs through the snowy forest and stops to notice the quietness of the trees and the frozen water in the lake. He is cold but he doesn't mind the cold. He rolls one ball of snow and then another and still another.

Jacob makes a snow man and shares the secrets of his heart with his new best friend. The snow man listens and does not judge. Jacob needed a sympathetic friend and he found one in the most unlikely place.

I can only think of one word to describe this ebook: SPLENDID!!!
Mr. Novak has done an amazing job portraying the emotions and feelings of the boy in this story. The black-and-white illustrations complement the text and add in-depth emotion to the story. I love the close-up illustration of Jacob's face with such a sad, lonely look. A picture is truly worth a thousand words.

The first word of each line of text is in bold print. I think this adds more drama and emotion to the story. The formatting is very professional and the story has a great flow from text to illustration.

The subject of substance abuse in the family is often swept under the rug. I am very grateful to Mr. Novak for writing this top-notch children's book. I am giving the book a 5 STAR RATING, but I wish I could give it more. Excellent choice for children of all ages.

I was expecting a nice, happy story for my five year old. This isn't it. Its a bit too somber and deep.
Steven has written and illustrated a charming book that looks at a less than charming part of life...loneliness. Without preaching, without blaming, seemingly without effort he helps us understand that friends can be found in the unlikeliest of places.
I thought this book was going to be a funny book to read to my grandson, who is two years old. I read this book beforehand and it is a sad book about a sad little boy that is lonely because of his parents. It makes you remember that not all children have happy beginnings.
This is a very touching story about the loneliness and sadness that many youth live with while growing up due to family neglect and abuse issues. As a foster parent, I have seen many kids come through my home who could relate to this story on so many levels. This is definitely a book I will keep on my . The illustrations are of professional quality as well, so you get the best of both worlds.
In a setting dreary and cold, readers are introduced to Jacob, a sullen young boy who has no definitive place in the world. After venturing out into the forest, he finds what we all yearn for - a friend. I bought the book as a Christmas gift for my daughter, but it turned out to be the perfect gift for me. I saw my childhood and for once, I saw I was not alone. There's a Jacob in us all but more importantly, there's a friend like Snow Man for us, too. Mr. Novak tugged my heartstrings with this one. It is a must read for every child and adult.
Jacob, doesn't have the perfect home life. His father drinks too much and his mother has gone to bed with depression. At school things aren't much better as he eats alone. Even in a group he feels alone, because he tries to bury all of his pain. He pushes all of his problems deep down. Until one day when it snows, he makes a snow man and now he has someone to tell his secrets to.

This isn't a happy happy story, but it is a story of hope. That sometimes talking about things, even if there is no one to answer, for some children it is their stuffed animals, for Jacob it is the Snow Man.

There are no easy answers, just the knowledge that sometimes bad things happen and that we have to live through them.

The artistry of the black and white drawings are so full of emotion that they tell stories all by themselves.

There is a part of me that wishes for a fairy tale ending to this story. However, I think the hope comes from the fact that there isn't any cavalry.

I highly recommend this book.
