Artos the First, High King of Montival, aka Rudi Mackenzie, has recovered the Sword of the Lady and must return to Montival, to turn the tide of the war against the CUT, to claim his throne, and his queen. Stirling's Change series continues its high level of quality story telling of an alternate history, where Earth drastically Changed in 1998, a change that ended modern civilization, no more electricity, no high pressure steam powered machinery, no explosives, no internal combustion engines, due to some sudden, and drastic, changes in the physical laws of the universe wrought upon humanity by unknown powers. These changes caused 90% of the human race to die within months, and many of the survivors to fall into barbarism, even cannibalism, with few isolated islands of civilization where skilled, talented, charismatic, and some say just WIERD individuals inspired and led people to recover and restore pre-industrial arts and technologies, islands that continue in an epic battle against barbarism and darkness. It is this darkness, corrupted by unknown enemies of humanity, of knowledge and order themselves. In this installment, we start to see the turning of the tide, as Artos has been given help by some good Powers, with the Sword, to fight for humanity's existence.Tags : The High King of Montival: A Novel of the Change (Change Series) [S. The High King of Montival A Novel of the Change Change Series S M Stirling 9780451463524 Books Reviews
How many is this one? Five? I've lost track. And I've lost interest. Is Stirling morphing into Jordan? I get tired of a plot after a while. End the freaking thing. By now, the author is packing air cushion baggies in the box, a true product!! You can tie the maiden to the railroad tracks just so many times before I start rooting for the locomotive.
The entire series of Novels of Change written by Stirling are always filled with the expected unexpected actions between the characters and the events surrounding them. This is one series that has to be read from the very first book and in order to get the full impact of the story; but it can be started anywhere in the series and still be an enjoyable read.
I was a huge fan of the first Dies The Fire book and that is really the only reason I kept with this series for so long. But, after this book I am done. This series has been getting slowly worse after the first book. Endless references to the weird little Wiccan Religion Stirling has become obsessed with really slow the book down. As do, countless ruminations on the difference between pre-change and post-change people. The annoying thing is, that actually could be an interesting theme if Stirling developed it in a better way. Instead of showing us the difference in the book he in a believable way, he instead hammers the theme down our throat by having almost every single character have an internal monologue that spells out the idea for us. This greatly slows down the plot.
Also, the series has changed from believable people operating in the morally murky and frighteningly plausible post-change aftermath to stilted, and one-dimensional characters fighting with the aid of magic. There is no real room for grey areas in Stirling's world. The good guys are boringly good, and the bad guys are 80s villian evil. Stirling still writes good battle scenes and the plot itself overall isn't terrible although it does not at all wrap up the series. However, the wooden characters and poorly handled main-theme really bring the joy of reading it down. I would wait for the library for this one.
I was fascinated with this series when I began reading it. Unfortunately once it began to turn into an updated version of King Arthur and Excalibur I found myself skimming through some sections. Usually as long as there is some type of action taking place I find myself interested but too often the author seems to spend too much time on minute details - particularly of battle scenes. Because I have invested so much time in the characters it is difficult to entirely abandon the series. Perhaps after the King Arturo's runs its course the series will return to story lines similar to the first few books.....
For creating and populating a new world S.M. Stirling ranks with Jules Verne and Edgar Rice Burroughs. He develops his characters, and tells a story that is engaging and interesting. Not only does he entertain you but he makes you think. One note though, it is distracting and annoying that the cover art does not match the characters depicted. In the story Rudi/Artos is left handed and blonde/red haired. On the cover he is right handed and has short dark hair. Appropriate for Mike Havel, but he has been out of the picture since The Protector's war.
I have truly enjoyed the entire series.
I also have enjoyed other works by Mr. Stirling.
This book, however, has fallen into what I call "the Robert Jordan syndrome".
We get pages of arcane information with very little action. what action does occur takes place off stage.
I assume that this book is setting the stage for the next book in the series which I hope will be as exciting as previous installments.
This book has taken me over a month to read. I usually finish a short book like this in 2-3 days.
By the way, one of the aspects of "the Robert Jordan syndrome" is not knowing when to pull all the plot elements together and end the series in a satisfying way.
Current example, Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin.
Stirling is a smart guy. He's milking this series a little bit, but why wouldn't he? Anyway, this is what, 8th, 9th? I've read enough. If you're the type that actually reads all 15 Robert Jordan books or whatever, by all means, keep going. Regardless, once I pick one of these up I can't put it down, gotta admit. I'll end up reading 400 pages or whatever in like 2 days because I just can't leave it alone. Says something about the writing!
