Complete Stories and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe 9780385074070 Books
On a dark and dreary forenoon in early February I picked up this Everyman edition of the Complete Stories of Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849). The book is a joy to read. Contained in this volume are such classics as: The Black Cat; The Narrative of A. Gordon Pym; The Fall of the House of Usher; The Tell-Tale Heart; A Jerusalem Tale; The Purloined Letter; The Murders in the Rue Morgue (the first detective story) and many other stories which may be less known to the reader. Poe was a brilliant man who wrote in an ornate style showing his great erudition, love of science and the possibilities of life after death. This edition is almost 1000 pages and will keep you flipping the pages with wonder and literary appreciation. A five star classic!Tags : Complete Stories and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe [Edgar Allan Poe] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Complete Stories and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe 9780385074070 Books Reviews
Best complete works I have seen for Poe. Has all kinds of goodies that I've never seen before. All the Delphi "Complete Works" books I have tried are outstanding; and, they totally blow away other works that claim to be "complete".
This collection might be complete, but it is not worth the price. It seems to be a hodge-podge of various OCR'ed texts, and there are typos and annoying formatting issues throughout. Moreover, the index does not contain links to each of the texts, which is an unforgivable omission on a electronic anthology. The result is that you have to search for the title of each text, which takes a while due to the size of this collection.
Were I to do this over again, I'd look for a better edition. In fact, I might do that anyway.
I don't have the education to appreciate all the references that Poe uses, nor do I read Latin and French, but can stumble through most of this. (He sometimes plays off some Latin and French quotes that I'm guessing was in literary and philosophical works he may have read, and were kicked around with friends at the pub, in his U of V days. But that's cake icing and most often not germane to the stories.)
It's been helpful, and educational, for me to read on because of the dictionary for antiquated words, or familiar words that have different connotations now. I say this as someone with a large vocabulary and as someone reasonably familiar with Elizabethan vocabulary.
The big surprise for me was his humor; Poe can be one sarcastic guy. I haven't read them all but so far only a handful are the expected horror stories.
First and foremost, the "Complete Works" needs to be complete. Poe's 1844 story, "The Bottle-Hoax," is missing from this collection. Thus the poor rating. As for the positives, the stories are listed on the contents page both alphabetically and chronologically, and they can be directly accessed from either list. And unlike other versions of the Complete Works of Edgar Allan Poe, both versions of "Berenice" and both versions of "The Black Cat" are included. But the additional versions of these two stories are only of minor importance, unlike the complete omission of a story, which is a major shortcoming. Other versions of the Complete Works include "The Bottle-Hoax" inexplicably absent from the Delphi version. So until Delphi corrects this omission, I would have to recommend one of the other versions.
While Poe is known for his "dark tales" there are some short stories that are truly intriguing (The Gold Bug is an example). He's often considered the father of the "detective story" genre...The Gold Bug is a great example of this together with the many darker tales such as The Black Cat, Tell-Tall Heart, Murders in the Rue Morgue. I haven't read all of the short stories, as I'm busy!
A good volume to purchase if you are a Poe fan, as everything is consolidated in one place.
If you love Poe, you can't be unhappy with this.
After seeing some of the other reviews, I am puzzled about the complaints with the navigation system. My edition ( on a Fire 6 ) has an alphabetical listing of the titles with a link to the first page in each story and a separate list of contents, obtainable by swiping from the left edge to the center of the screen, also with links to the first pages.
The navigation does lack book marks, or, at least, I can't find how to book mark a page.
None the less, it is a great buy for $0.99.
There are so many choices here with respect to Edgar Allan Poe - at least among the $1.00 and under selections - it was hard to settle on which collection would be the most satisfying. Ultimately, I recommend this one, noting that all have pluses and minuses. This is a great (supposedly complete) collection with quality formatting and an interactive table of contents that lists the stories alphabetically, as well as by year. Having both makes it easy to put Poe's writings in perspective chronologically, while maintaining easy navigation. By the way, if you sample the book, you need to select "cover" in the "go to" menu to see the full ToC. Just page after the cover.
You won't find a biography here, but those of us who love Poe already know it and those who don't will be able to find satisfying bios on the web. The only true negative that kept me from giving this 5 stars is the lack of annotations for various foreign phrases. The other inexpensive Poe collections appear to suffer the same omission but nonetheless, it would have been nice. Definition annotations remain as with most books.
For me, this Poe compendium gives the opportunity to revisit all the stories I read many years ago at a price that is unbeatable. I don't regret the choice and am happy to stop agonizing over it.
