Once I started reading this book, I could not put it down. I loved the mystery and paranormal twist! I have read some reviews that state that is a great book for the young adult, I have to agree that it is, but I truly enjoyed it, therefore, I would say it is a good read for the young and old!

Anyone up for taking over the world? This novel is a very quick, fast-paced read. Maya lives in a sleepy little town; she rarely looks for trouble, but trouble finds her nonetheless. Maya is soon deep into a plot to save the world, taking her readers on an exciting adventure. It is easy for the reader to enjoy reading about Maya and her friends; they are all quite likable and not overtly "teenagerish" or immature. Maya is a good protagonist, with qualities that are good, but not annoyingly "nice" or "perfect". The author did a good job with the secondary characters, the reader will want to hear more about them and their quirks in the novel. The plot is intriguing for a teen novel; the characters will keep the readers interest. This novel is recommended for teens/young adults who enjoy well-written novels.

I didn't have very high expectations from this book. From the summary, it sounded cheesy and predictable. Some parts were a little cheesy, I admit, and a few interactions were kind of predictable. But those don't keep the story from being good enough to read in a couple hours without getting up once to pee or eat. My impending carpal tunnel and kidney infection thank this book.

The writing was great. There was one typo in the entire thing. It was also really easy to get emotionally attached to the characters because the descriptions were funny, believable and endearing. I loved seeing Maya's inner struggles, because while it's normally typical of female heroines, her unique flair made it hilarious and and heart-wrenching.

Obviously, I loved the characters. Lucy, hands-down favorite character of the year so far. I love her one-track mind, her confidence, her sardonic-ness, her total contrast with Maya. They're a perfect match.

The clash between Gavin and Blake is a little cliched, especially Maya's having to choose between them romantically, but it works out pretty well, one of them being evil and all.

The one star was taken off because her parents had no personality. And neither did any of her friends except Lucy, but I can live with that, since Lucy had so much.

Anyway, I'm definitely hoping for a sequel, and I'd recommend this book to young adult readers who aren't offended by sex talk, especially ones who like...(*don't say Twilight, don't say Twilight...*) Amelia Atwater-Rhodes, J.K. Rowling, and, I guess, Twilight.
As I was reading Ghosts of Coronado Bay, I kept thinking about the works of Margaret Downing Hahn, who writes wonderful supernatural-themed novels for YA. Like Hahn's novels, Ghosts is a fast-paced, quick read, in fact I read it within two hours. The plot is engaging and the characters are interesting (though the cover art needs some work), though not quite as atmospheric as Hahn's works.

Maya Blair is a teenage girl who has just broken up with her possessive ex-boyfriend who proceeds to stalk her. As if this isn't enough trouble, Maya finds herself falling for two young men of very different personality types. Blake is kind and thoughtful, and Gavin is darkly handsome and magnetic. Who is a girl to choose? Well, in Maya's case, there is the slight complication in that both boys are ghosts! Maya apparently can see ghosts and interact with them, and her close presence enables ghosts to manifest into solid beings. Unfortunately, Maya discovers that not all ghosts are benign, and one particular ghost has a nefarious plan which places Maya's life in peril.

The story moves along very quickly, and it is an easy enough read that I raced through till the end. There are some flaws though - Maya is an OK protagonist but at times, I felt her character was a bit frustrating and the way she spoke seemed a bit out of place for a girl, even in her jarring interactions with her supposed best friend Lucy who is portrayed as a promiscuous character. Other than that, it is a decent, engaging supernatural read and is best suited for older teens.

Maya Blair, a young teenage girl from Coronado Island, is a seer. She's been seeing ghosts since being very small, but the only one that has had any impact on her life has been her Grandma Elsa, until now. The town has dredged up a sunken ship for on display and with it has come not so-friendly spirits. Her story is filled with modern-day teenage activity, paranormal and magical occurences, and even a little bot of ghostly romance. Come follow her as she finds the strength inside herself and with her friends as they fight off the dark wizardry that has been lurking in the depths of the sea and triumphs in the end when good versus evil.

This was a very enjoyable young adult mystery for me. I haven't read too many as of yet and I think this one was a very good one for me to start with. I really enjoyed the characters and their teenage dialogue was perfectly written. The bantering between Maya and her best friend Lucy, reminded me of my daughter and her best friend when they were growing up, so it sounded very real and genuine. J.G. Faherty must have an inside track on teeneagers in some respect!

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys contemporary YA that has a mysterious, paranormal twist.
