The death of the elderly Meredith Winterbottom could easily have been from natural causes – but lead investigator Detective Sergeant Kathy Kolla was suspicious. Living with her two sisters, Eleanor and Peg, the three women were refusing to leave their apartment in Jerusalem Lane in London, where developers were gradually buying everyone out in the surrounding area. But the ladies were determined to stay where they had been for many years.

Partnering Kathy for this case was Scotland Yard Inspector David Brock – which seemed odd in itself – but Kathy found herself getting along with Brock and when they bounced ideas off each other, came up with some sound answers. But when papers came to light connected to the late Karl Marx, both Kathy and Brock wondered if there was more to the case than there seemed…

The Marx Sisters by Aussie author Barry Maitland is a great crime/mystery novel – first in the Brock and Kolla series, I’m keen to read on in the series. The twist at the end surprised me as I thought I’d worked it out! I have thoroughly enjoyed this author’s work in the past and this one didn’t disappoint. Highly recommended.

The Marx Sisters A Kathy and Brock Mystery Kathy and Brock Mysteries Barry Maitland 9780140291766 Books Reviews

The Marx Sisters is the first book in the Brock and Kolla mystery series. I've read other books in this series and it was interesting to go back and read how Brock and Kolla's working relationship first began. This is a well written and well plotted British detective series. If you like British mysteries you might also try books by Martin Edwards, Val McDermid, and Ann Cleeves.
I liked this as I enjoy getting to know the characters more than I care for " who did it", but the stupidity of our heroine towards the end was so annoying - I hate it when writers make their otherwise smart goriness do something stupid and out of character to " move the story along" to its conclusion.
Very satisfying and a great read. Beautiful sense of place -- inner city London in all its seediness - and a literary mystery as well. and a series of murders. Excellent characterisations - including the minor players - which I suspect are drawn from life. One of those rare books where you do not want it to end and at the same you must turn the next page! Outstanding!
I thought The Marx Sisters was only ok because the detectives weren't featured enough and I didn't think the resolution was that good.

But I decided to give the series another chance by reading The Malconta. I really liked it, so I'm going next to the 3rd, All My Enemies.
I'm a fan of the detective genre and am happy to have found a new-to-me writer to add to my wishlist. Shame the title gave away one of the elements of mystery that could otherwise have been exploited better but the variety of characters both big and small and their back stories weaved seamlessly into the maze of a plot kept me turning the pages all too quickly... I've already got the next one lined up on my wishlist!
I thought that this book was well written with enough mystery and good pace to keep me interested until the end. I didn't figure it out, but wasn't surprised at the outcome. I really dislike intensely when authors pad their books with boring and unnecessary information, and this author is not guilty of that, which I appreciate. I do recommend The Marx Sisters, because it is a well written, good mystery, interesting and at a good pace to keep a reader involved.
This was an interesting book by a new author about three sisters who were relations to Karl Marx. They lived in an older area of London, which still retained its cultural flavor and authenticity. Unfortunately, developers are interested in it...and suddenly the older people in the area are selling their homes and their businesses, even when they've sworn they would never do that. These three older ladies who are sisters are part of this group. They live in an older building that belongs to the oldest sister, whose son is pressuring her to sell the place. When she turns up dead after lying down to take a nap, the police become involved...because although it looks like a suicide it quickly becomes clear it was a murder.

A local detective, Kathy Kolla, is brought in on the case, but so is a Chief Inspector from Scotland Yard, David Brock, which has Kolla wondering what is going on. Why would an Inspector be assigned to a rather nonimportant murder like this? Even though both Kolla and Brock suspect that the older lady has been murdered for financial reasons, they cannot prove it, and the case is closed. That is, until one of the other sisters dies under suspicious circumstances...
Then everything changes when it gets found out that the older sister had had important documents and letters from Marx to Engels worth a lot of money, and there were many people after those documents...

The book was really slow at the beginning, but I really got into the characters and the writing in the middle of the book and at the end. Since this was a new book from a new author, I'm going to read another one, and see how they evolve...because I liked the characters and the typical British mystery this was.
