In the second decade of the 20th century, major world events resonate even on secluded Stone Mountain where Bessie Elliott lives with her husband Fletcher. There's a great war, one that takes away many young men, including Bessie's kin, some never to return. Bessie's role of healer intensifies as she treats those suffering from the Spanish flu and tries to keep it from spreading further on her mountain. She defends a young woman who's in the middle of a controversy that threatens to tear her community apart. And she finds herself involved in the suffragette movement as the women of North Carolina fight to gain their rights under the constitution.

Then when one of her family members makes an appalling decision, one that has the potential to damage a child, Bessie impulsively steps forward to right the wrong.

Do Yourselves a favor...FIRST read the Whistling Woman, then read Moonfixer, then read Beloved Woman. This ongoing tale of "Aunt Bessie and Uncle Fletcher" are warm, informative, loving stories. The two authors are sisters who are sharing the lives of their ancestors in a wonderful way. The story is most interesting and you really get to know Aunt Bessie and Uncle Fletcher. I feel like they are my aunt and uncle. I can't wait until the next book comes out. These books are easy and warming to read. They have done extensive research into their families. Makes me realize how many of us have interesting relatives that we have not begun to know. I would highly recommend these books to any age reader. It is a truly wonderful story.
This is a marvelous story but there is something that just never happened in the telling of it. It seems to me that there is a story that never quite got captured. The language must be that of the mountain people but it often goes the well educated author.. This choice creates a gap and rhythm in telling the actual story. It seems to me that the author can not tell the reader in the language of the mountains and therefore loose the cadence of the story..
.A young girl is thrust into the roll of mother to her Father and Mothers ever increasing family as the mother is always having to rest. due to her pregnancy. A young brother is swept away in a flash food and drowns. The mother dies in child birth and the father leaves the oldest girl to cope with the family while he drinks. He has always been her hero and this role undergoes some revision. She goes to school at a local college and becomes a teacher. She marries and moves across the mountain to a farm that the two build. The story of the neighbors and the school tells of the hardships and loss to her and her neighbors. She uses her knowledge of herbs and plants taught to her by her Indian grandmother to help care for them. The story seems to be a progressive story of loss and grief. She was a beloved woman for her teaching, loving and willingness to do healing but where did the be loving get lost..
Takes place in the early 1900's, WWI. The little town that Bessie grew up in has changed greatly, the Hotel became a German internment camp, but the people treated the prisoners and how the prisoners felt about that treatment.

Bessie and Fletch have been married many years at this time and her family have moved from Hot Springs to Knoxville, Tennessee and the other kids have gotten married.

The Spanish Flu hits her little corner of the world and the devastation is heart breaking. There are survivors but life has changed many in the little town.

Bessie is very interested in the women's movement and becomes a suffragette, and influences the women in her area. And a trip to visit her family in Knoxville changes her life and that of her husband.
When Beloved Woman was released, I'd been waiting (not too patiently) for it's release for what seemed like many months!
Let me say, Ladies, you've done it again! Reading Bessie's story was like visiting an old friend after having not seen them for a long time. She is so interesting and wise, and I love that she loved her husband so much.

The history you include in the books will make for good reading until Wise Woman comes out ( But HURRY). Also the information on women's suffrage, I'd never heard so many details about and the German Internment camp was news to me.

How neat that you are telling your Dad's story and starting from so far back as to give us the background of the couple who raised him. I can't wait to read what his life was like with Bessie and Fletch. Keep up the good work and Thank You both.
What a nice read. Gives you a warm down home feeling while reading. Characters you can relate to and like. Well worth the time to read.
This is a great book in a series of three great books! I will be excitedly looking for the fourth. Loved it and found that this third had many more historical information. Very interesting and a pleasure to read.
These books just pulled me in and won't let go. I just finished book 3 and went to immediately to find the next book in the Journey. Can't believe the sadness that came over me when I found I'd have to wait. Bessie's story is so engrossing, so captivating. I'll wait, but I won't like it.
Can't wait for the 4th book in the series! From about 1899 till about 1920s, so far, I'm waiting to see where
"Moonfixer" ends up at the end of her life....love the two "C" sisters' books.
