This was suggested by Amazon as being similar to other books I've bought, so, upfront, I was expecting a bit more romance to the story. Also, wasn't expecting the next book in the series to be a sequel, leaving me with an unfinished story here, but having said all that, it was so fun to read, really easy to get lost in. Bits of the story were kind of campy, some of it even sad or emotional, and it really kept my attention. Even with maybe too many details here or there, and even with some small editing errors to notice, it kept me reading all day.

What to say about this hero... Stoic, inscrutable, cold and autocratic, the most powerful man in the galaxy. An elite warrior with flaring red eyes, dark tanned skin, tall, dressed all in black, with a burnoose and black face veil. Even has a cape flowing and snapping behind him. I couldn't help but picture Darth Vader, ha! Tammaru definitely has this deadly, serious vibe about him, and from the beginning you know he has no patience for Kathy. Heartless jerk, uncaring of this primitive human from Earth. But you keep reading, because you just know Kathy is going to show him how tough and resilient human women can be! She looks him in those scary eyes and never flinches.

In a situation not of her own making, Kathy picks herself up and carries on, willing to learn, to adapt, to stand up for herself in this new alien world, under the moody shadow of Tam. A warning spoiler:: there is a scene where Tam, playing at a political ruse, physically strikes Kathy. I was upset by this, even teared up a bit, like, how could you, Tam? But then, you want to understand this complex, mysterious man. There are moments where he resents Kathy, as he's been genetically bred to be a warrior only, so he fights this pull toward her and the change she means to his life.

I didn't see love here just yet, but I hope to see it in the sequel. I was living for those moments where cold Tam showed affection and warmth. So I have to read book 2 just to see him fall in love (hopefully!) and be at Kathy's tender mercy. The author imagined so many different alien species, cultures, and sweet, quirky secondary characters in the story, people who cared about Kathy. Little Widgin pulled at my heartstrings. Fun story! Happy I took a chance on it.

Yay! Science fiction that is about the wonder of new experiences (not sexual escapades). There is a small romantic plot but that isn't the focus. This story grabbed me and didn't let go.

And that ending! I have to read the next one!
Fantastic writing, great plot twists, great action and adventure. Character development and evolution continued through out the book. I look forward to the next!
This book gives us a world of outerspace wonder. The characters were well developed and believable. The writing is superb and just draws you into the story. Some free books I had to stop reading because of poor writing but not this one. I even bought the next installment. For science fiction fans who also loves action and a touch of romance.
When looking at this book's cover, then reading the book's description, I never expected it to be fun to read. But it was. While some of the situations the main character gets in are a little crazy, her friendly attitude throughout the story is refreshing. There is a romantic theme, but the story is definately science fiction. Fun science fiction, my favorite kind.
I randomly found this book and was glad. I read the whole HUGE book in one day!

I am hoping that things will be better for The MCs and that this will be a long series to come. Love the unique universe and I can't wait to start the next book tomorrow!
I loved this book! I just picked it up casually because the description was intriguing, and I ended up completely engrossed in the story. I will say here that there were some typos -- but I am only mentioning these because someone else is going to at some point, and I want to make it clear that they were clearly just mistypes. The writing was smooth, the plot was excellent and I felt like I was reading the work of a professional every step of the way. I also read the sequel, and I just have to ask Where is Part 3? You're killing me, Kelly Tharp!!! )

I can't believe more people haven't reviewed this book. It's solid sci-fi with a thread of romance, and I enjoyed every minute of both books.

Now give me No. 3!!! )
I downloaded this as a freebie, and almost didn't read it because I'm admittedly more of a sci-fi romance person. However, I'm oh so glad I did. )

Ms. Tharp builds an impressive galaxy. Not just a world, but a number of them that somehow manage to work together. Mostly.

I was amazed at how so many different beings could co-exist, how people of completely different origins and races could come together for a common goal. And I really love the characters. I wanted to know so much more about them, follow their continuing stories, that I had to download the second book (not free!) immediately. ) I read them both in several days. I couldn't put them down!

I really enjoyed this book and can't wait for the third in the series!

But don't hold back... go ahead and read the first two. You'll want to read them over again! )
